Notre Dame Cathedral

The Notre Dame Cathedral is also a must see in downtown Ho Chi Minh City. The cathedral is situated on the Paris Square, close to the Reunification Palace. It was built between 1863 and 1880 with all materials imported from France. Like the Notre Dame de Paris, this stunning French colonial structure also features twined towers and stained glass windows though its interior is not as much splendid as the other. Its redbrick frontage boasts neo-Romanesque architecture, creating its major grandeur. In front of the cathedral, there is a small well-maintained garden with a statue of Virgin Mary at the centre. Opening hours are not fixed and you had better visit it during Sunday morning masses.

During October 2005, the statue was reported to have shed tears, attracting thousands of people and forcing authorities to stop traffic around the Cathedral. However, the top clergy of the Catholic Church in Vietnam confirmed that the Virgin Mary statue in front of a cathedral did not shed tears, which nevertheless failed to disperse the crowd flocking to the statue days after the incident. The reported 'tear' flowed down the right cheek of the face of the statue.
